Welcome to the official sign-up post for the 2026 Leo Tolstoy Chapter-a-Day Read-Along. This will be the ninth year of our chapter-a-day tradition, and for the first time since our 2020 reading of War and Peace, we are returning to one of literature’s most powerful voices: Leo Tolstoy.
In past years we’ve read epics of American history, classic fantasy adventures, the swashbuckling novels of Dumas, and the works of George Eliot. But in 2026 we will focus our entire year on two masterpieces by a single author, Leo Tolstoy. From January 1 through August 27, we will read Tolstoy’s widely beloved Anna Karenina. Then, from August 28 to December 31, we will turn to his later and more spiritually searching novel, Resurrection.
Though I have read War and Peace and many of Tolstoy’s short stories–and count War and Peace among my all-time favorite books–this will be my very first time reading either Anna Karenina or Resurrection. That makes this year’s journey an especially exciting one, and I invite you to experience these novels alongside me at the gentle, contemplative pace of one chapter a day. Tolstoy’s chapters are typically very short, which makes them perfect for our daily schedule.
Both Anna Karenina and Resurrection explore the mysteries and contradictions of the human soul: love and conscience, failure and hope, social injustice and moral rebirth. Whether you are new to Tolstoy or have read him many times before, these books offer an opportunity to reflect on life, meaning, and the choices that shape who we become.

And now, here’s a closer look at what we’ll be reading in 2026!
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy – 239 chapters (January 1 to August 27)
We begin the year with one of the most celebrated novels ever written: Anna Karenina. First published in 1877, Tolstoy’s masterpiece explores the inner lives of its characters with psychological depth. This is a novel of love and betrayal, marriage and duty, faith and meaning. Its world is filled with richly drawn characters, vivid rural and urban settings, and profound meditations on the choices that define a life.
Many consider Anna Karenina to be the greatest novel ever written, which makes me even more excited to read it for the first time. I’m looking forward to entering its world slowly and attentively, savoring Tolstoy’s artistry one chapter at a time and sharing the journey with you.
Resurrection by Leo Tolstoy – 129 chapters (August 28 to December 31)
In late August we turn to one of Tolstoy’s final novels, Resurrection, published in 1899. This book reflects the mature Tolstoy–philosophically searching, morally urgent, and deeply concerned with justice and mercy. It tells the story of personal failure and the long road toward moral renewal, offering a powerful meditation on what it means to confront one’s past and change the course of one’s life.
Where Anna Karenina focuses on the complexities of the heart, Resurrection widens the lens to examine the moral structures of society. Reading it after Anna Karenina creates a natural movement from the personal to the social, from inner life to outward action. And, again, I will be reading it for the very first time, which makes the shared journey even more meaningful.
Conclusion and Reading Schedule
Careful readers and mathematicians will notice that 239+129=368, which means that we will have to read four chapters on December 31 to finish in one year.

I have already read Anna Karenina, so I will do my own reading of Brothers Karamozov while you are doing AK. I will then join in for Resurrection.
Thank you so much for organizing this fun challenge.
Great! I look forward to joining us!
Hi! I’ve been doing a slow read-along of War and Peace for 2025, so I’m very excited to join the 2026 read-along of Anna Karenina and Resurrection. Thanks for this together — I can’t wait to start!
Thanks, Sunny, excited to have you participate!
I haven’t read AK since my twenties and would love a good excuse to read it again, so I’m in. Thanks for continuing to host these wonderful chapter-a-day readlongs Nick.
Thank you, Brona! So glad you’re back for more!
I’m in! Tried reading Anna Karenina years ago but couldn’t get through it, in part because it was too big a book for carrying on my commute. But the chapter-a-day format seems a good way to read these longer works.
Terrific! Welcome aboard!

I will join in with this. I arrived here through Paula at Book Jotter and am intrigued. I have read Anna Karenina but will be pleased to do so again. Thank you for this idea and for organising.
That’s great, happy to have you along!
I’m going to try to keep up and read along with you. I’ve read my first Bulgakov and Dostoevsky this year, so I figured I might as well pick up Tolstoy. I picked up a beautiful copy of Anna Karenina a few years ago with vague intentions of “someday,” and this feels like as good a time as any. Maybe next year I’ll go even further down the Russian author rabbit hole
Hi Nick, I’m Laurie @ classiclaurie.com and I have just started blogging again.
I have seen your chapter-a-day for several years now and decided to participate with Resurrection, because after reading AK and WandP a few years ago, I wanted something more and bought this a couple of weeks ago. Then I saw your blog and thought, Serendipity!
See you in August!
I’m really looking forward to this. Read Anna Karenina more than 5o years ago and frankly remember nothing about it. Probably was too young to understand much of it. So I’m excited to spend 2026 with you.

I cannot remember when I read Anna Karenina…back in the day. I’ve reached a point in my reading life that there is no time to read all the books I’d like to read…but want to revisit some classics and discover them with a new perspective…probably the last time I will be reading some massive classics. So I’ll join you and some “book friends” (Brona, DebNance and you…) with this chapter-a-day read along! (NancyElin.blog)
I also did a War and Peace Slow Read this year and am interested to re-read Anna Karenina at the same pace. Thanks for hosting this read-along!
Hi Nick,
I’ve never read AK before. I just got back into reading last year and wanted to challenge myself in 2026. Excited to give it a go! Thanks for hosting.
Hi,
I’ve never read either, but heard about your slow read last year around August time and was gutted I was too late to catch up! I’ve just ordered a copy of Anna Karenina and am looking forward to the 1st.
Thanks for doing this again.

Hi Nick! After purchasing a copy years ago, I’m looking forward to finally reading AK. Happy new year!
HI, joining in from the U.S. (Virginia), I’m retiring in January and have been looking for online book clubs to help keep more structure to my reading 🙂 I’ve never read anything by Tolstoy or really much of any Russian literature so I’m looking forward to this!
