I am<\/em>
\nunfurled canvas<\/em>
\nengorged with<\/em>
\nwild wind,
\nsurging through
\nstorm-tossed seas.<\/em><\/p>\n

Welcome to\u00a0Unfurled Canvas<\/em>. This website is currently not being promoted or publicized online, so your presence here is serendipitous. I hope you find something that moves you and gives you grace.<\/p>\n

I began Unfurled Canvas<\/em> in part because I am haunted by two ghosts. The first is Oliver Wendell Holmes, who once wrote, “Alas for those that never sing, but die with all their music in them.”<\/em><\/p>\n

I do not wish to die with all my music in me. Unfurled Canvas<\/em> is where I sing.<\/p>\n

The second ghost is George Gray, from poet Edgar Lee Masters:<\/p>\n

I have studied many times<\/em>
\nThe marble which was chiseled for me–<\/em>
\nA boat with a furled sail at rest in a harbor.<\/em>
\nIn truth it pictures not my destination<\/em>
\nBut my life.<\/em>
\nFor love was offered me and I shrank from its disillusionment;<\/em>
\nSorrow knocked at my door, but I was afraid;<\/em>
\nAmbition called to me, but I dreaded the chances.<\/em>
\nYet all the while I hungered for meaning in my life.<\/em>
\nAnd now I know that we must lift the sail<\/em>
\nAnd catch the winds of destiny<\/em>
\nWherever they drive the boat.<\/em>
\nTo put meaning in one’s life may end in madness,<\/em>
\nBut life without meaning is the torture<\/em>
\nOf restlessness and vague desire–<\/em>
\nIt is a boat longing for the sea and yet afraid.<\/em><\/p>\n

I do not want my tombstone image to be a ship with furled sails, but a ship running under full canvas, plunging through the waves, driven by the wild wind. Unfurled Canvas<\/em> is my attempt to “lift the sail and catch the winds of destiny.”<\/p>\n
