Week 1: Beginnings – Roots and the Power of Origins

Welcome to Week 1 of Roots, the beginning of the American Masterpieces Chapter-a-Day Read-Along. In Chapters 1-5 we are introduced to the world of Kunta Kinte’s village of Juffure, or Jufureh, in The Gambia, West Africa. These opening chapters set the stage for the story by immersing us in the life, culture, and traditions of Kunta’s Mandinka community where we see a society rich in customs, values, and connections to the natural world. Kunta’s family and community are deeply rooted in their heritage, passing down stories and wisdom through generations.

What stood out to you about Kunta’s early life in Juffure? Were there particular descriptions, customs, or interactions that resonated with you? Did you find any similarities to stories or traditions from your own family or culture?

What about your own roots? These chapters invite us to think about our family heritage. What are the stories that have been passed down in your family? How do they shape your sense of identity? Roots reminds us of the power of remembering and honoring where we come from—and how those roots can sustain us through life’s challenges.
