{"id":9347,"date":"2025-03-16T12:41:58","date_gmt":"2025-03-16T19:41:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/?p=9347"},"modified":"2025-03-16T12:41:58","modified_gmt":"2025-03-16T19:41:58","slug":"an-ear-to-the-wood-homily-for-the-second-sunday-of-lent-year-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/an-ear-to-the-wood-homily-for-the-second-sunday-of-lent-year-c","title":{"rendered":"An Ear to the Wood: Homily for the Second Sunday of Lent &#8211; Year C"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9351\" src=\"http:\/\/nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/piano01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"994\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/piano01.jpg 994w, http:\/\/nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/piano01-300x124.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/piano01-500x207.jpg 500w, http:\/\/nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/piano01-768x318.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 994px) 100vw, 994px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>March is a restless month.<br \/>\nOne day it feels like spring,<br \/>\nthe next, winter comes roaring back<br \/>\nwith a sudden snowstorm, like this weekend.<br \/>\nAcross the country, the weather has been wild:<br \/>\ntornadoes, windstorms, wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>In many ways our world feels like a storm right now.<br \/>\nThe headlines change by the hour\u2014<br \/>\ninflation on the rise, financial markets dropping,<br \/>\npeople being detained,<br \/>\nprotests in the streets, arguments online.<br \/>\nSome are afraid of what\u2019s happening,<br \/>\nothers don\u2019t mind so much,<br \/>\nand still others just feel exhausted by it all.<\/p>\n<p>And in the middle of this storm,<br \/>\nwe gather here, in this church,<br \/>\non this Second Sunday of Lent,<br \/>\nand we hear this Gospel\u2014<br \/>\nthis mysterious moment on the mountaintop<br \/>\nwhen Jesus is transfigured before Peter, James, and John.<\/p>\n<p>At first, this scene might not seem to have much to say<br \/>\nabout our world today.<br \/>\nBut actually it speaks to us precisely because we are feeling shaken,<br \/>\nuncertain, and divided.<br \/>\nBecause in the middle of all the dazzling light<br \/>\nand the appearance of Moses and Elijah,<br \/>\nthere is one voice that breaks through the noise,<br \/>\nthrough the dark cloud.<br \/>\nThe voice of the Father, saying:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cThis is my chosen Son; listen to him.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The world is very loud right now.<br \/>\nThere are voices from every side telling us what to believe,<br \/>\nwhat to fear, who to blame.<br \/>\nSome voices say we should be outraged.<br \/>\nOthers say we should be celebrating.<br \/>\nSome voices cry out in pain and fear.<br \/>\nOthers dismiss those concerns.<br \/>\nAnd if we\u2019re honest with ourselves, really honest,<br \/>\nmost of us don\u2019t just hear the noise\u2014we <em>add<\/em> to it.<br \/>\nWe argue, we react, we post, we judge.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to get caught up in the storm,<br \/>\nto pick our side, to raise our voice,<br \/>\nto believe that if we shout loud enough,<br \/>\nwe can fix the world or win the argument.<\/p>\n<p>But today, on this mountain,<br \/>\nGod the Father speaks through the noise and tells us:<br \/>\n<em>Listen.<\/em><br \/>\nNot to the politicians.<br \/>\nNot to the media.<br \/>\nNot to the voices of fear or anger or division.<br \/>\n<em>Listen to Him.<\/em><br \/>\nListen to Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>And what does Jesus say?<br \/>\nA quick review of the Gospel reminds us:<br \/>\nHe tells us to love our enemies.<br \/>\nTo welcome the stranger.<br \/>\nTo care for the poor.<br \/>\nTo seek the lost.<br \/>\nTo be peacemakers.<br \/>\nTo take up our cross.<\/p>\n<p>That is not the voice of the world.<br \/>\nThat is not the voice of social media.<br \/>\nThat is not the voice of power or ideology.<br \/>\nBut it is the only voice that will lead us through this storm.<br \/>\n<em>Listen to Him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Listening sounds simple.<br \/>\nBut it is not.<br \/>\nBecause real listening changes us.<br \/>\nIt forces us to put aside our own assumptions.<br \/>\nIt humbles us.<br \/>\nIt makes us slow down when we want to react.<\/p>\n<p>We see this in Peter today.<br \/>\nPeter, who always has something to say.<br \/>\nPeter, who, at this moment, is so overwhelmed\u2028that he just starts talking:<br \/>\n&#8220;Let\u2019s build three tents! Let\u2019s stay here!&#8221;<br \/>\nHe\u2019s doing what we all do<br \/>\nwhen we don\u2019t know what to do\u2014<br \/>\nhe fills the silence with words.<br \/>\nBut God the Father interrupts him.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is my Son. Listen to Him.\u201d<br \/>\nStop talking.<br \/>\nStop reacting.<br \/>\nJust listen.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a hard thing to do.<br \/>\nBecause sometimes listening to Jesus<br \/>\nmeans hearing things we don\u2019t want to hear.<br \/>\n<em>Forgive that person.\u2028Let go of that resentment.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Trust me even when you\u2019re afraid.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Speak truth even when it costs you something.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Choose love when anger feels easier.<\/em><br \/>\nThis is hard to hear.<br \/>\nBut this is the Gospel.<\/p>\n<p>And the only way to hear those things<br \/>\nthe only way to listen to Jesus<br \/>\nis if we make space for silence.<br \/>\nFor prayer.<br \/>\nFor reflection.<br \/>\nIf we\u2019re constantly filling every moment with noise\u2014<br \/>\nscrolling, talking, reacting\u2014<br \/>\nwe may never hear the voice of Jesus at all.<\/p>\n<p>This moment on the mountaintop<br \/>\nis a glimpse of clarity before the road gets dark.<br \/>\nThe disciples don\u2019t know it yet,<br \/>\nbut soon Jesus will lead them down from the mountain<br \/>\nand begin his journey to the cross.<br \/>\nThe Transfiguration is not an escape from suffering\u2014<br \/>\nit is a preparation for it.<br \/>\nJesus gives Peter, James, and John this moment of light<br \/>\nso they can hold onto it when the darkness comes.<\/p>\n<p>And we need that, too.<br \/>\nBecause no matter where you stand politically,<br \/>\nno matter how the headlines make you feel,<br \/>\nthe truth is that we are all walking forward into an uncertain world.<br \/>\nAnd we have a choice.<br \/>\nWe can let the noise and the fear and the division define us.<br \/>\nOr we can listen to Him.<br \/>\nWe can listen to the one who calls us to be different.<\/p>\n<p>To be people of peace in a world of anger.<br \/>\nTo be people of compassion in a world of cruelty.<br \/>\nTo be people of mercy when the world only offers justice without love.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a story about the great composer Beethoven.<br \/>\nNear the end of his life,<br \/>\nhe was completely deaf.<br \/>\nHe could no longer hear the music he wrote.<br \/>\nBut he would sit at the piano and press his ear to the wood,<br \/>\nfeeling the vibrations of the notes as he played.<br \/>\nHe couldn\u2019t hear the music with his ears,<br \/>\nbut he could still sense it.<br \/>\nThink of how much time and effort and energy and patience that took.<\/p>\n<p>Do we have that kind of commitment to hearing the voice of God,<br \/>\nthat kind of time and effort and energy and patience?<br \/>\nBecause the world is loud,<br \/>\nand it is easy to let all the other voices drown out the voice of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>This week, can we take an honest look at what voices we listen to?<br \/>\nWho gets our attention?<br \/>\nHow much time do we spend scrolling through the news,<br \/>\nsocial media, podcasts, TV?<br \/>\nHow many hours do we give to voices that make us anxious,<br \/>\nangry, distracted, or just numb?<br \/>\nAnd then,<br \/>\nHow much time do I give to Jesus?<br \/>\nNot only in church,<br \/>\nbut in dedicated, quiet moments of listening.<br \/>\nBeethoven longed so much to hear his music<br \/>\nthat he pressed his ear to the wood of the piano.<br \/>\nCan we press our ear to the wood of the Cross?<br \/>\nBecause if we focus our hearts on Him,<br \/>\nif we listen\u2014<br \/>\nnot only in church but all throughout out days\u2014<br \/>\nthen even while the storm rages,<br \/>\nwe will still hear His voice.<\/p>\n<p>So that\u2019s the challenge this Lent.<br \/>\nNot only to give up chocolate.<br \/>\nNot only to pray more.<br \/>\nBut to <em>listen<\/em>.<br \/>\nTo listen in Scripture.<br \/>\nTo listen in prayer.<br \/>\nTo listen to the voice of Christ<br \/>\nin the people who are hurting, afraid, or in need.<\/p>\n<p>And then, to come down from the mountain\u2014<br \/>\nnot to stay sheltered, not to isolate ourselves,<br \/>\nbut to carry what we\u2019ve heard into the world.<br \/>\nBecause the world doesn\u2019t need more noise.<br \/>\nIt needs people who have truly listened to Jesus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March is a restless month.
