I know that the reading group <a href=\"http:\/\/tiltingatwindmillsblog.wordpress.com\/\">Tilting at Windmills<\/a> is about to begin <span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/1402563426?tag=nickslists-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;camp=211189&amp;link_code=as2&amp;creativeASIN=1402563426\">Don Quixote<\/a>, <\/span>so today I want to share the kind of music that helps set the atmosphere when I read this most excellent novel. (Sidenote: If you&#8217;ve never read <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Don Quixote<\/span> you should join <a href=\"http:\/\/tiltingatwindmillsblog.wordpress.com\/\">Tilting at Windmills<\/a> and read it&#8211;it&#8217;s my favorite book, hands down, and in my opinion the greatest novel ever written.)<\/p>\n<p>To achieve a Spanish ambience when I read it, I love listening to Rodrigo&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00000415P\/nickslists-20\">Concierto de Aranjuez for guitar and orchestra<\/a>. Its light and lively melodies remind me of the relationship between Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and it makes me feel like I&#8217;m in a Spanish villa. If you can&#8217;t get a hold of Rodrigo&#8217;s music, almost any CD of Baroque guitar concertos will provide a good substitute.<\/p>\n<p>I also enjoy Richard Strauss&#8217;s tone poem <a style=\"font-style: italic;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00000I7WC\/nickslists-20\">Don Quixote<\/a>, conducted by Herbert von Karajan.<\/p>\n<p>Next time I&#8217;ll talk about music I like to listen to while reading Tolkien.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I wrote about the music I like to listen to while reading Patrick O&#8217;Brian&#8217;s Master and Commander series.
