{"id":3837,"date":"2009-12-24T09:50:47","date_gmt":"2009-12-24T17:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/?p=3837"},"modified":"2017-12-30T10:32:07","modified_gmt":"2017-12-30T18:32:07","slug":"my-favorite-reads-of-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/my-favorite-reads-of-2009","title":{"rendered":"My Favorite Reads of 2009"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3838\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/abandonment-to-divine-providence.jpg\" alt=\"Abandonment to Divine Providence\" width=\"322\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/abandonment-to-divine-providence.jpg 322w, http:\/\/nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/abandonment-to-divine-providence-193x300.jpg 193w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 322px) 100vw, 322px\" \/>In reverse order, here are the best 10 books I read this year:<\/p>\n<ol reversed=\"\">\n<li><em>Quest for the Living God<\/em> by Elizabeth Johnson &#8211; an intelligently written survey of where modern theology is heading, for good or ill; I can tell that one reading of this book is not enough<\/li>\n<li><em>His Majesty&#8217;s Dragon<\/em> by Naomi Novik &#8211; great mixture of history and fantasy<\/li>\n<li><em>Left to Tell<\/em> by Immaculee Ilibagiza &#8211; hard to believe a genocide like this took place in my lifetime; with all its tragedy, still an uplifting testament to faith<\/li>\n<li><em>The Shack<\/em> by William Paul Young &#8211; surprisingly good; the first 80 pages are hell, but the rest are an interesting expression of heaven<\/li>\n<li><em>Gloria&#8217;s Miracle<\/em> by Jerry Brewer &#8211; I hope more people discover the story of this saintly young girl from Seattle whose influence is just beginning to be felt; will she be the first saint from the Pacific Northwest?<\/li>\n<li><em>Reading Scripture as the Word of God<\/em> by George Martin &#8211; an outstanding guide to praying with scripture; probably the best book I have read on the subject; practical and wise<\/li>\n<li><em>The Wanderers<\/em> by Deacon Henry Garon &#8211; a deacon reflects on his experiences with the poor; a simple but profound memoir<\/li>\n<li><em>Here&#8217;s My Heart, Here&#8217;s My Hand<\/em> by William Barry, SJ &#8211; a beautiful little book on drawing closer to God<\/li>\n<li><em>Things Hidden: Scripture as Spirituality<\/em> by Richard Rohr &#8211; the most influential book I read this year; a survey of some major themes of scripture and their implications for our lives; I read it twice in 2009 and will revisit it again in 2010<\/li>\n<li><em>Abandonment to Divine Providence<\/em> by Jean-Pierre de Caussade &#8211; my second-favorite book of 2008 became my favorite this year when I re-read it.
