He died of tuberculosis on this day in 1821 at the age of 25. In his brief life he wrote several poems that are considered major works in English literature such as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetry-archive.com\/k\/la_belle_dame_sans_merci.html\">La Belle Dame Sans Merci<\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetry-archive.com\/k\/ode_on_a_grecian_urn.html\">Ode on a Grecian Urn<\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetry-archive.com\/k\/ode_to_psyche.html\">Ode to Psyche<\/a>,&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/126\/32.html\">Endymion<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here is one of my favorites:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>On First Looking into Chapman&#8217;s Homer<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nMuch have I travel&#8217;d in the realms of gold,<br \/>\nAnd many goodly states and kingdoms seen;<br \/>\nRound many western islands have I been<br \/>\nWhich bards in fealty to Apollo hold.<br \/>\nOft of one wide expanse had I been told<br \/>\nThat deep-brow&#8217;d Homer ruled as his demesne;<br \/>\nYet did I never breathe its pure serene<br \/>\nTill I heard Chapman speak out loud and bold:<br \/>\nThen I felt I like some watcher of the skies<br \/>\nWhen a new planet swims into his ken;<br \/>\nOr like stout Cortez when with eagle eyes<br \/>\nHe star&#8217;d at the Pacific &#8212; and all his men<br \/>\nLook&#8217;d at each other with a wild surmise &#8212;<br \/>\nSilent, upon a peak in Darien.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is the anniversary of the death of John Keats, one of the major poets of the Romantic era.
