I began with a quote from Jean-Pierre de Caussade:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Today God still speaks to us as he used to speak to our ancestors at a time when there were neither spiritual directors nor any systems of spirituality&#8230;Religious devotion had not become a science crammed with precepts and detailed instructions.\u00a0 Nowadays, no doubt, our special needs make this necessary, but in the old days people were less complex and more straightforward.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/ipodteen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-215\" title=\"ipodteen\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/ipodteen-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/ipodteen-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/ipodteen-50x50.jpg 50w, http:\/\/nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/ipodteen.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>God speaks to us at every moment of the day, even in technology.\u00a0 But we adults are &#8220;digital immigrants,&#8221; relatively new to the world of technology; our students are &#8220;digital citizens,&#8221; born not with silver spoons in their mouths, but with headphones in their ears, and cell phones in their hands:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>92% of teens own an mp3 player (86% own iPods).<\/li>\n<li>97% buy their music primarily from the iTunes store.<\/li>\n<li>80% of teens carry a cell phone.<\/li>\n<li>The average child gets his or her first cell phone between the age of 10 and 11.<\/li>\n<li>42% of teens can text blindfolded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can lament this all we want, but this is the world in which our kids live.\u00a0 Jesus told his disciples to &#8220;Go out into the whole world and proclaim the gospel.&#8221;\u00a0 Since our students live in the world of mp3s, text messaging and social networks, it is there we must go if we are to effectively proclaim the gospel.\u00a0 As Pope Benedict asserted in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/benedict_xvi\/messages\/communications\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_mes_20100124_44th-world-communications-day_en.html\"><em>The Priest and Pastoral Ministry in a Digital World<\/em><\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Priests are thus challenged to proclaim the Gospel by employing the latest generation of audiovisual resources (images, videos, animated features, blogs, websites) which, alongside traditional means, can open up broad new vistas for dialogue, evangelization and catechesis.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But our students are not necessarily looking for spiritual guidance online.\u00a0 One way we can help students is to point them to online spiritual resources.\u00a0 I spent a very fast hour trying to present as many of these resources as I could to the teachers that attended my workshop.<\/p>\n<p>The resources we looked at can be found on the following page: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nicksenger.com\/onecatholiclife\/presentation-resources\/prayer-tools-for-netizens\">Prayer Tools for Netizens<\/a>.
